This week I am highlighting a local youth project, which, although relatively new, is already having a big impact in Fort William and several villages across Lochaber. The Buzz Project is the brainchild of Simon Nicholls, a qualified youth worker and presenter on Nevis Radio. Along with professional musician and composer, Chris Adams, you can find him in a converted bus parked on a road near you. Inside the bus you will discover a music studio, kitted out with electric drums and guitars and a relaxing seating area more akin to an upmarket nightclub. They travel to different communities throughout the week, to work with young people between the ages of 14-25 – music can break down so many barriers and help people develop, that’s the ethos behind the project.
I am privileged to be able to support the charity, as one of their trustees, and see the enthusiasm that Chris and Simon have, which really pushes the whole project along. Somehow, Simon has blagged a pass to this year’s Belladrum; when they will be taking the bus along to showcase their work.
A few weeks ago, local Member of Parliament, Charles Kennedy joined the team for the official launch. An insider tells me he may be a secret Jimi Hendrix fan, so particularly appreciated a musical contribution from Chris in tribute to that influential musician.
