Emergency services attended an incident yesterday afternoon (09 April 2014) whereby a woman was found in the canal at Banavie, south of Fort William.
Police were notified by a member of the public that a woman was seen in the canal at Banavie, known as ‘Neptune’s Staircase’, shortly before 14:00 hours.
Police, Ambulance and Coastguard all attended and the woman was recovered from the water. She was taken onwards to Belford Hospital by road ambulance but sadly the woman died.
In addition a car was recovered from the canal by the Police Scotland Dive and Marine Unit, which belonged to the woman.
Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death but there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.
No further details are available until confirmation that all next of kin have been informed.
A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
